How to Generate Random Pairs

  1. Enter or paste one name or item per line.
  2. Select Generate Pairs to shuffle the list and pair entries two at a time.
  3. Select Re-pair to create another random pairing from the same list.
  4. Copy the result when you are ready to use or share the pairs.

This random pair maker trims extra whitespace, ignores blank lines, and preserves duplicate entries. Each listed occurrence is included in the result.

What Can You Use Random Pairing For?

Classroom and Study Partners

Pair students for discussion, peer review, interview practice, tutoring, reading, or lab activities.

Meetings and Workshops

Create partner rotations for introductions, feedback, breakout exercises, and skill practice.

Games and Activities

Choose random buddies or opponents for casual games, challenges, and social activities.

General List Pairing

Pair names, topics, tasks, prompts, or other items from one list without assigning them manually.

What Happens With an Odd Number of Names?

The generator creates as many complete pairs as possible and clearly marks one final entry as Unpaired. It never drops an item or silently turns the last pair into a group of three. Re-pairing may choose a different unpaired entry.

Random Pair Generator vs Random Group Generator

Use this page when every complete result should contain exactly two entries—partners, buddies, or one-to-one practice pairs. Use the Random Group Generator when you need three or more entries per group, a chosen number of groups, or flexible group sizes.

One List, Not Two-List Matching

This partner generator pairs entries with other entries from the same list. It does not match each item in list A with an item from a separate list B. Two-list matching is a different task and is not included here.

FAQ

How do I randomly pair names?

Paste one name per line and select Generate Pairs. The list is shuffled before entries are placed into pairs.

Can I reshuffle the pairs?

Yes. Select Re-pair to create a fresh result without entering the list again.

Can I pair students randomly?

Yes. Teachers can paste student names for partner work, peer review, interview practice, games, or other classroom activities.

Does it avoid pairs that appeared before?

No. This version creates an independent random result each time, so a previous pair may appear again. It does not keep pairing history.

Does the tool save my list?

No. The input and results stay only in the current page state and are cleared when the page reloads. The tool adds no localStorage or sessionStorage key.
